You have probably heard this before.

“This model is too powerful.”
“We need to be careful.”
“We cannot release this yet.”

It sounds serious. Responsible. Even reassuring.

But it should also raise a question.

Too dangerous for who?

Recently, Anthropic teased a new model called Mythos Preview as part of Project Glasswing. According to them, this model can find and exploit software vulnerabilities at a level that rivals or exceeds top human experts.

That sounds impressive.

It also sounds familiar.

Because we have seen this story before.

We have heard this before

Back in 2019, OpenAI delayed the release of GPT-2.

The reason?

It was considered too dangerous.

Too powerful. Too easy to misuse. Too risky to release publicly.

Fast forward to today.

We now have open source models running locally on laptops that are far more capable than GPT-2 ever was.

Nothing collapsed.

No global catastrophe happened because GPT-2 was released.

The world adapted.

And this pattern keeps repeating.

Each new generation of models is introduced with a narrative of risk and caution. But over time, those capabilities become widely available anyway.

So what is really going on?

The real issue is not the model

The problem is not that models are becoming more powerful.

That is expected.

The real issue is who controls them.

When a single organization holds a model that is significantly more capable than others, it creates a power imbalance.

That organization decides:

  • who gets access

  • how much it costs

  • what use cases are allowed

  • what is blocked

  • when access can be revoked

This is not just a technical issue.

It is a structural one.

Because intelligence is becoming infrastructure.

And infrastructure controlled by a few actors is always a risk.

Fear can shape the narrative

When companies say a model is “too dangerous to release,” it does two things at once.

First, it signals responsibility.

Second, it reinforces control.

It creates the idea that only a small group of organizations can be trusted to handle these systems safely.

But that framing has consequences.

It can justify:

  • restricted access

  • higher pricing

  • slower distribution

  • tighter control over usage

In other words, it concentrates power.

And whether intentional or not, that starts to look like regulation capture.

Not necessarily through laws, but through narrative.

The “security” argument cuts both ways

Anthropic’s Project Glasswing focuses on cybersecurity.

The idea is that models like Mythos can find vulnerabilities faster than humans, which could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

That part is true.

But it is only half the story.

Because the same capability can also be used to fix vulnerabilities.

And if only a few organizations have access to that capability, then:

  • they are better protected

  • others are not

  • the gap increases

Security does not come from restricting tools.

It comes from broad access to defensive capabilities.

If only a small group can detect and fix vulnerabilities at scale, then everyone else becomes relatively weaker.

Centralization is the real risk

The real danger is not that AI becomes powerful.

It is that it becomes centralized.

A world where only a handful of companies control the most advanced models creates several problems:

  • dependence on a few providers

  • unequal access to intelligence

  • pricing that limits who can benefit

  • control over what is allowed or not

And we are already seeing signs of this.

New frontier models are becoming more expensive.

Access is increasingly gated.

Some capabilities are only available through enterprise agreements.

This leads to a simple question.

Do we want a world where intelligence is available to everyone, or only to those who can afford it?

The economic divide in AI

Even if prices per token decrease over time, the most advanced models are still expensive.

If the best tools are only accessible to:

  • large companies

  • well-funded organizations

  • governments

then AI becomes a multiplier for existing inequality.

The people who already have resources get more leverage.

Those who do not fall further behind.

That is not just an economic issue.

It is a societal one.

Because access to intelligence shapes:

  • productivity

  • innovation

  • decision making

  • opportunity

Open models change the equation

There is another path.

Open source models.

When models are open and widely available:

  • more people can use them

  • more people can improve them

  • more people can defend against risks

  • no single entity controls access

This reduces the concentration of power.

It also makes the ecosystem more resilient.

Because capability is distributed, not centralized.

We are already seeing this.

Open models are improving fast.

They run locally.

They are becoming usable for real work.

And they are not controlled by a single gatekeeper.

If everyone has access, everyone is safer

There is a common assumption that restricting access makes systems safer.

But in many cases, the opposite is true.

If only a few actors have advanced capabilities, then:

  • they have an advantage

  • others are exposed

  • the system becomes asymmetric

If everyone has access:

  • defenders can match attackers

  • knowledge spreads faster

  • vulnerabilities are found and fixed sooner

Security improves through balance, not scarcity.

So what is the real danger?

It is not Mythos.

It is not any single model.

It is the structure we are building around them.

A structure where:

  • power is concentrated

  • access is restricted

  • narratives justify control

  • and intelligence becomes a product for a few

That is the real risk.

Not that AI becomes too powerful.

But that it becomes too controlled.

A question worth asking

When you hear:

“This model is too dangerous to release”

It is worth asking:

Is the danger the model itself?

Or the fact that only a few organizations have it?
