How to Search Inside AutoCAD Files on Mac
You remember the drawing. It had the kitchen extension, a note about the existing staircase, and the client’s name in the title block.
But your project folder contains Drawing1.dwg, Plan_v4.dwg, and several revisions spread across old folders. Finding the right plan means opening drawings until something looks familiar.
With Fenn, you can search inside your AutoCAD files on your Mac. Type a room name, a drawing note, or a detail you remember to find the relevant file and layout.
Which AutoCAD files can Fenn search?
Fenn supports DWG (.dwg) and DXF (.dxf) files. It indexes readable drawing text and generates previews of supported 2D layouts. You can add your original drawings directly, without exporting each one to PDF first. Supported file types
Fenn includes its own drawing reader, so AutoCAD does not need to be installed for indexing. The current file size limit is 256 MiB per drawing.
Find a drawing from the words inside it
A filename rarely describes everything in a drawing. A single plan can contain room labels, construction notes, drawing references, and information in its title block.
Fenn can search readable text saved in the drawing, including text within placed blocks. For example, a search for existing staircase can help you retrieve a drawing containing that note, even if its filename is simply Drawing1.dwg.
You can also search for a project name or a distinctive annotation you remember. That gives you more ways to find old work without continually adding keywords to filenames.
Find the relevant layout within a file
One DWG file can contain several layouts. Finding the file still leaves you with the task of locating the plan you need.
Fenn keeps layout names alongside the indexed content and can show matching layouts in its results. If the relevant note is on a layout called Electrical plan, that context helps you decide where to look.
With visual indexing enabled, you can also search the generated 2D previews by describing what you remember, then inspect the results to identify the right drawing.

Keep client drawings private
Architectural plans, engineering drawings, and unreleased designs can contain confidential information.
Fenn indexes your files on your Mac and uses local AI by default. Once the required models and files are available locally, search works offline. Sending relevant content to a cloud AI provider requires you to explicitly choose that provider. How Fenn handles privacy
Start with an old project folder and search for an annotation you remember. Finding the drawing should take less effort than recreating the work. Try Fenn for Mac
