How to Search Canon CR3 Files on Mac
A photographer recently asked us to add support for Canon .cr3 files.
The reason was simple: his Mac contained thousands of RAW photographs with filenames such as IMG_4821.CR3. He could find a file if he remembered its name, folder or capture date.
But that is rarely how photographers remember their work.
You remember the portrait with dramatic side lighting. The bird flying over the water. The wedding photograph taken during golden hour.
You remember the image, not the filename.
Fenn 1.3.4 now supports Canon CR3 files, making it possible to search your RAW photography archive by visual content directly on your Mac.
What is a CR3 file?
CR3 is a RAW image format used by many Canon cameras.
Unlike JPEG, a RAW file preserves much more of the original information captured by the camera sensor. This gives photographers more flexibility when adjusting exposure, colors and other details during editing.
The tradeoff is that RAW archives quickly become large and difficult to navigate.
A single shoot can produce hundreds or thousands of files named:
IMG_4821.CR3IMG_4822.CR3IMG_4823.CR3
Those names contain almost no information about what is actually inside each photograph.
Why Canon CR3 files are difficult to search
Finder can help you locate files by extension, date, folder or filename. It can show you every .cr3 file on your Mac.
That is useful, but it does not solve the main problem.
You are usually not looking for every CR3 file. You are looking for one specific photograph inside an archive containing thousands of them.
You might remember:
The subject
The location
The lighting
The colors
The clothing
The composition
The mood of the image
Unless you manually created tags or descriptive filenames, that information is difficult to search with traditional file tools.
Search CR3 files by what appears in the photo
Fenn indexes the visual content of your Canon RAW files locally on your Mac.
Instead of searching for IMG_4821.CR3, you can search for what you remember:
“Bride outside during golden hour”
“Red car on a mountain road”
“Bird flying above the ocean”
“Portrait with blue studio lighting”
“Dog running through snow”
“Black and white street photography”
“Product photo with a dark background”
Fenn returns the CR3 photographs that visually match your description.
The words do not need to appear in the filename, folder or metadata.

This means you can search an old photography archive without first renaming every file or creating thousands of manual tags.
Find visually similar Canon photos
Sometimes you cannot describe exactly what you want.
You may already have one photograph and want to find images with a similar composition, subject, color palette or lighting style.
Fenn also supports image-to-image search.
Drop a reference image into Fenn and use it to find visually similar photographs across your indexed folders.
This can help you:
Find alternate shots from the same session
Build a consistent portfolio
Collect photographs with a similar visual style
Create mood boards
Rediscover related work stored in different folders
Search CR3 files without converting them to JPEG
You do not need to convert your entire CR3 archive to JPEG before indexing it with Fenn.
Fenn can process supported Canon RAW files directly. Your originals remain in their existing folders and keep their original format.
You can search CR3 files alongside:
Canon
.cr2and.crwfilesJPEG and PNG exports
TIFF files
HEIC images
Other supported camera RAW formats
The complete compatibility list is available in the Fenn file-type documentation.
Your Canon RAW archive stays private
Photography archives can contain sensitive material:
Wedding and family photographs
Private events
Unreleased commercial campaigns
Client portraits
Internal product photography
Images covered by confidentiality agreements
Uploading an entire RAW archive to a cloud AI provider is not always acceptable.
Fenn performs file indexing and visual search locally on your Mac. Your CR3 files do not need to be uploaded to Fenn or another cloud service to become searchable.
Your photographs stay on your storage, and your search index stays on your computer.

Fenn does not replace your RAW editor
Fenn is designed to help you find photographs.
It does not replace Lightroom, Capture One, Photoshop or Canon Digital Photo Professional for developing and editing RAW images.
The workflow is complementary:
Use Fenn to find the CR3 photograph you remember.
Open the original file in your preferred photography application.
Continue your normal editing workflow.
Fenn solves the search problem while your existing software handles editing.
Stop searching through folders manually
Canon cameras can produce thousands of visually rich photographs with filenames that reveal almost nothing.
You should not need to remember that the photograph you want was called IMG_7394.CR3.
Describe what you remember and let Fenn search the visual content of your archive.
Your camera created the filename.
You remember the photograph.
Fenn connects the two.
