macOS 27 and Siri AI: Be careful Before You Update
Your Mac might hold client contracts, confidential conversations, source code or your company’s next product.
Before updating to macOS 27, there is a question worth asking: which AI features can send information off your Mac, and how do you stop them?
The concern is not that AI exists on your computer. Local AI can be genuinely useful. The concern is whether you remain in control of where your information is processed.
Can you turn off Siri AI in macOS 27?
Yes. Apple documents a Turn Off Siri option under System Settings → Siri. However, turning off Siri does not disable every Apple Intelligence feature. Other features have separate controls.
Apple’s instructions send you to different places for message summaries, email summaries, notification summaries and other AI functions. Screen Time provides additional restrictions. This is a collection of individual controls, not a single system-wide AI off switch. Apple’s feature controls
That distinction matters. Someone who turns off Siri could reasonably believe they have finished disabling Apple’s AI. They have not necessarily finished the job.
For a company that markets simplicity, saying “no” to AI should not require a tour of multiple settings panels.
Does Apple Intelligence keep all processing on your Mac?
No. Many Apple Intelligence tasks run locally, but more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says relevant request data is processed on its servers without being retained or made accessible to Apple. Apple’s privacy documentation
Those protections matter. But private cloud processing is still cloud processing.
For someone handling confidential work, the question is not only whether Apple has designed a secure service. It is whether that information should leave the device at all.
An employer may approve one provider and prohibit others. A client may expect unpublished work to remain within an agreed environment. A freelancer may simply want their documents processed on their own computer.
Security assurances do not replace your decision about where your data goes.
This does not mean installing macOS 27 automatically uploads your entire document library. It means you should understand the processing behind the features you enable and use.
What should businesses check before updating?
Businesses should review their cloud-processing policy, identify permitted AI features, and verify that their device-management tools can enforce those choices before rolling out macOS 27.
Apple provides management controls for individual features, including Writing Tools, image generation and app-specific capabilities. Availability depends on the management service. Apple also documents on-device-only controls for particular functions, such as dictation and translation. Those are not a universal local-only mode for Apple Intelligence. Apple’s management documentation
In the controls reviewed for this article, Apple does not document a general switch that keeps every local AI feature while blocking all Private Cloud Compute requests.
Large organizations can assign an IT team to review these settings. A small business or independent professional may have to work through them alone.
They deserve clear controls too.
Before upgrading a work Mac:
Check your employer’s or client’s rules about cloud AI.
Review AI controls beyond the Siri settings.
Confirm which restrictions your management tools actually enforce.
Back up your Mac and plan the upgrade without neglecting security updates.
Afterward, Apple’s Apple Intelligence Report can help inspect requests sent to Private Cloud Compute. Turning that report off disables reporting, not cloud processing. How the report works
Can you use AI search without sending files to the cloud?
Yes. Fenn indexes and searches your files locally. Its default AI models run on your Mac, and local processing can work offline once the required models and files are available.
You can find documents by their contents without uploading your archive to a cloud AI provider. If you deliberately choose an optional cloud provider in Fenn, relevant context may leave your Mac, so keep the local configuration when confidentiality requires it. Fenn’s privacy documentation
Using Fenn does not disable Apple Intelligence or change macOS settings. It gives you a separate, local way to make your files searchable.
We are not against AI on the Mac. We build it.
We believe useful AI should come with an equally useful choice: keep my information on my computer.
Apple can explain why its cloud is secure. The decision to send confidential information there should still belong to you.
