MacBook Pro M6: Should You Buy It?
MacBook Pro M6: Should You Buy It?
The MacBook Pro M6 starts at $1,999. It promises faster performance and more power for AI running directly on your Mac. But should you buy one, and which version is worth your money?
Our recommendation: choose 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage if you want a versatile Mac for creative work, demanding apps, and private AI. Before ordering, check the price of an equivalent M5. A good discount could make last year’s model the smarter purchase.
Apple announced the new 14-inch MacBook Pro on October 27, with availability beginning November 6. Apple’s announcement.
How Much Does the MacBook Pro M6 Cost?
These are the US launch prices with the standard display:
Configuration | Price before sales tax |
|---|---|
16GB memory / 1TB storage | $1,999 |
24GB memory / 1TB storage | $2,199 |
32GB memory / 1TB storage | $2,399 |
Moving from 1TB to 2TB of storage adds $500. Choosing 4TB adds $1,500.
Memory and storage do different jobs. Memory helps your Mac handle apps and AI while you work. Storage is the space available for your documents, photos, videos, and downloaded AI models.
Who Is This Mac Designed For?
We would consider the MacBook Pro M6 for photographers editing large collections, developers building apps, creators working with video, and anyone regularly juggling demanding software.
It becomes particularly interesting if your current Mac slows down during everyday work, struggles with your projects, or no longer lasts long enough away from a charger.
While a MacBook Air handles everyday work well, a refurbished M5 MacBook Pro can be a better fit for professionals who need reliable performance during long, demanding tasks, a better screen, and more connections for external devices.
And if your current Mac already handles everything comfortably, a new release is not a reason to replace it.
Which Configuration Should You Choose?
Start with what you actually do:
24GB / 1TB: our recommendation for most readers. The extra $200 gives your apps and AI more room to work together. The 24GB and 32GB versions also move information through memory faster than the entry model, which can help some AI tasks. Apple’s specifications.
32GB+ / 1TB: for more demanding local AI use. Consider this if you want to experiment with larger AI models while keeping other applications open. It provides more room, although it cannot run every model available.
For storage, look at how much space you use today. If your files fit comfortably within 1TB, we would generally prioritize additional memory.
An external drive can hold growing photo and video collections. Paying for more internal storage makes sense when you need everything with you without carrying another drive.
Should You Buy a MacBook Pro M5 Instead?
Yes, if the saving is worthwhile.
On October 28, Apple listed a certified refurbished M5 with 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage for $1,779. That is $420 less than the equivalent new M6 configuration.
Apple includes a one-year limited warranty, although refurbished stock changes. View the Apple listing.
At that price difference, we would seriously consider the M5. Compare the same memory and storage, and check whether the offer is for a new, refurbished, or used machine.
If prices are close, we would choose the M6. If choosing the M5 lets you afford more memory, it could be the better fit for demanding apps and local AI.
Already own an M5? We would keep it unless you can identify a specific limitation that the new machine solves.
What Does the M6 Mean for Private AI?
A more capable computer gives you more opportunities to use AI directly on the device you own.
That means software can help you work with personal documents, client files, photos, and recordings without uploading that content to an AI provider.
The app you choose still matters. Buying an M6 does not automatically make every AI service private.
With Fenn, you can find information inside your files, return to the relevant page or moment in a recording, and ask questions about your documents. Explore what Fenn can do.
Fenn uses local AI by default. Once the required models and files are available, local search and AI processing can work offline. Sending content to an optional cloud model requires you to explicitly select that provider. How Fenn handles privacy.
You do not need a new M6 to start using Fenn on a compatible Mac. If you are buying a new computer, though, it is worth choosing one with room for the private AI tools you want to use.
